Designed partly by Inigo Jones, Lincoln's Inn Fields came under threat in the 1640s from a developer who wanted to build on this open space. However, it was saved from such a fate by students from Lincoln's Inn and other residents, who secured the land's safety so that it could forever remain a public park.
A favourite lunch spot for nearby workers in the summer months, the square also contains two netball courts and three hard tennis courts. Bookings for these can be made by telephone, on 07717 516351 or in person at the park attendant's hut in the centre of the fields.
