Something of a character, the Californian artist Dennis Severs lived in 18 Folgate Street in much the same way as its inhabitants might have done in the early 18th century, so with with no electricity or modern comforts. He invented the fictional Jervis family, Huguenot silkweavers, and filled the house with 'their' things – half-eaten meals, chamber pots and discarded clothes – to create a unique atmosphere that "bombarded visitors' senses" and gave a sense that they had been interrupted. Severs wanted to create an 18th century ambience and was outraged at the house being referred to as a museum. Visitors to this quirky time capsule are invited to wander the house in silence – a unique and memorable experience.
