Although you have to book in advance to visit this museum, it's an interesting place to take a wander. Located within the London Fire Brigade's training centre, the imposing Winchester House, it holds a wealth of memorabilia telling the history of fire-fighting in the capital, from the Great Fire of 1666 up to and including the present day.
Winchester House was built in 1820 and was both home and workplace to London's chief fire officers between 1878 and 1937 – it now houses one of the most comprehensive collections of firefighting equipment and memorabilia in the country. Exhibits range from early leather helmets to recently replaced breathing apparatus.
