As the cathedral of the capital, St Paul's is one of London's most recognisable and historic landmarks. The first service took place in 1697, since which the funerals of Nelson, Wellington and Churchill; the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II; and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana have taken place here.
Highlights of a visit to Sir Christopher Wren's recently restored masterpiece include Jean Tijou's beautiful wrought iron gates of 1700; listening to the 1695 organ which Mendelssohn once played; visiting the tombs of Nelson and Wellington; and, of course, testing the unique acoustics of the Whispering Gallery before climbing up to the Golden Gallery to enjoy a panoramic view of London that is second to none.
A new addition to the cathedral is Oculus, a 270-degree film 'experience' in the crypt which tells 1,400 years of St Paul's history.
Accessibility
Artsline rate St Paul's as having "Good access", saying that it completed major works to improve access for disabled people in 2009. It also notes that the staff have a "good attitude." Read more. The St Paul's website has a page on its accessibility and its new Oculus attraction allows those who can't climb the steps to the top of the dome to see how it looks from inside.
