The Guildhall Art Gallery is a tranquil place to re-acquaint yourself with some of this country's best-loved pictures and discover some new ones. Located in the heart of the City next to the medieval Guildhall, the gallery houses well-known Victorian paintings and sculpture and fascinating London subjects, past and present. The gallery's collection spans 400 years and ranges from portraits of kings and queens to the work of contemporary London artists. John Singleton Copley's enormous painting, The Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar (also known as The Siege of Gibraltar), is one of the largest in the country and spans two floors of the gallery. A changing selection of works by Sir Matthew Smith can also always be found on display.
But the Guildhall Art Gallery's appeal doesn't end there: below the gallery lie the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, discovered in 1988. Here visitors can step into the arena of Roman London's Amphitheatre for the first time in 2,000 years, where evocative light and sound effects bring the age of the gladiators alive.
Around 250 works can be seen at any one time and displays are changed regularly. There is also a programme of temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
