Bunhill Fields has much to offer history buffs in search of London’s dark past. It is the last resting place for an estimated 120,000 bodies, including three of Britain's most eminent Nonconformists – William Blake, John Bunyan and Daniel Defoe. Susannah Wesley, mother of John Wesley, the father of Methodism, is also buried here. Before larger cemeteries began opening on London’s outskirts, graves were packed closely together – something visitors will notice here.

Despite its dark past, Bunhill Fields is now a charming Grade I-listed open space, protected from City life by a canopy of magnificent London plane trees and popular with residents, office workers and school children. It is also a site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation and key in providing a home for wildlife. A tour worth taking.
