Originally created to circulate the waste water from the air conditioning system of the Barbican Arts Centre, the lakes have been turned into a haven for wildlife through careful water body management and the addition of planting gabions. This spring saw the successful nesting of two pairs of moorhen and a pair of coots, plus the lakes are now the regular home of a heron and yellow wagtails.
