Opening to the public on 10 June 2000, the Millennium Bridge was the first new pedestrian bridge crossing the Thames for more than a century.
A dramatic addition to the Thames bridges, it connects St Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Gallery creating an important link between the diverse Southbank cultural scene and the historic City of London.
The design of the bridge was the subject of a competition organised in 1996 by Southwark Council, with the winning entry an innovative "blade of light" design from engineers Arup, architects Foster and Partners and sculptor Sir Anthony Caro.
The bridge is now one of London’s most recognised landmarks and is used by thousands daily, offering as it does fantastic views of the capital’s architecture.

There is a lift at the north end (the City of London) of Millennium Bridge which goes to the Thames Path. The route from Queen Victoria Street is sloped, as is the exit at the south side.
