At the time of its sale in 1999, Wates City bought Britannic House (now City Point) for £143m, making it per acre the most expensive real estate in the world. This tall, thin building looms large over the Barbican complex, the endless blue-tinted glass and ‘roll-over’ style roof a stark contrast to the brutalist concrete. A refurbishment was completed in 2000 by Sheppard Robson. The 36-storey structure was retained, extended and re-clad to improve its efficiency, and designed for multiple occupancies. The new building includes 111,480m² of office, retail, restaurant and leisure area. When refurbished, City Point was London's second tallest building but it was soon overtaken in 2002 by the 179.8 metre Gherkin.
