One Coleman Street is home to Legal & General's headquarters. It hugs the corner of London Wall and Coleman Street (the former site of Austral House) and stands out for its unusual shape. The nine-storey landmark building – a popular piece of modern City architecture thanks to its ‘space-age’ sensibilities – is clad in polished precast concrete panels with polished stainless steel trimmed windows. An impressive entrance hall welcomes visitors. Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, who worked with David Walker Architects on the design, claim the structure is “one of the most space efficient buildings in London”. Adjacent to the building and in front of the Girdlers' Hall (originally built in 1681 and rebuilt in 1961 having been destroyed in World War II) is a new public garden.
