Home to the ancient Priory of the Knights Hospitallers who, in the Middle Ages, fought for their faith and tended the sick in their hospital in Jerusalem. The site houses a 16th century church, a 12th century crypt and a Tudor gate house containing collections of silver, ceramics, furniture and paintings from the knights' time in Malta.
Since the knights moved out, the Gate has had several connections with notable figures from history, including Richard Hogarth (father of William), Dr Johnson and David Garrick. In 1874 it became the home of the British Order of St John and an exhibition tells of the history and work of the present day Order.
