When the old Guildhall Art Gallery was demolished in 1987, archaeologists were called in to check the site before building work began. What they discovered was the remains of London's only Roman amphitheatre. This once majestic 5,000 seat building, close to a Roman fort, would have been used for entertainment, religious occasions, animal fighting, the public execution of criminals and the odd gladiatorial showdown. The gallery finally reopened in 1999, with a new design that incorporated the amphitheatre in the basement in an impressive display.
