After a £13m expansion, the Whitechapel Gallery (just to the east of the City on the rough-and-ready Whitechapel Road) is now a must-see on any art-lover's London visit. For over 100 years the venue has shown artists from modern masters such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo to contemporaries such as Sophie Calle, Lucien Freud, Gilbert & George and Mark Wallinger.

As well as the shiny new galleries, the space also hosts artist commissions, collection displays, historic archives, education resources, art courses, a dining room and a bookshop.
