St Bride's, 'the cathedral of Fleet Street', stands on a site whose history spans 2,000 years. Since the time when the Romans built here, there has been seven churches on the site. A wartime bomb left the church a smouldering shell for 17 years and Fleet Street had only a makeshift building in place of the 'journalists' church. But it was during this period that St Bride's discovered its history – the restoration work gave the archaeologists, led by Professor WF Grimes, the chance to excavate, adding another 2,000 years to St Bride's history.
