Since its debut in 1988, the Great River Race has firmly established itself in the sporting calendar. Teams of varying standards compete – some are here purely for the fun factor, others are in it to win it. This year the rowers start in east London at Docklands and race the 21 miles to Richmond in west London, taking around an hour to pass through the City. As Time Out magazine says, it's "Less po-faced than the Oxbridge race and much more colourful."
