Winner of the best Director Academy Award (1958), Vincente Minelli is known as an auteur who brought musicals to a new level and elicited exquiste performances from stars such as Judy Garland (whom he married), Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Spencer Tracy and Kirk Douglas in such filmic gems as gigi and Meet Me in St Louis.
