Under its 1694 founding Charter, the Bank of England received a statutory right to trade in gold and the institution has been linked to the precious metal ever since. In the year of the Olympics, when the ultimate accolade of gold is given to the best of the world’s athletes, this exhibition examines the part gold has played during the Bank’s history and its role in relation to gold today.
On display are a rich mix of objects including coins, extremely rare Roman gold bars, historic banknotes (repayable in gold) along with the story of the Gold Standard and cartoons touching on gold. Finally there is the ‘Gold Experience’. Visitors will be able to enjoy a rare opportunity to try to lift a London bullion market bar weighing approximately 13kg of pure (99.95%) gold.
