Public toilets

The City of London Corporation provides and maintains six male and female attended public conveniences and 14 automatic public conveniences throughout the City. The attended public conveniences are located at:

  • Paternoster - near to St Paul's Chapter House
  • Tower Hill - in the Tower Place development opposite the Tower of London
  • Royal Exchange - accessed via the entrance to Royal Exchange subway
  • Bishopsgate - on the corner of Bishopsgate and Middlesex Street
  • Smithfield - in the centre of the road at West Smithfield. (Please note: whilst the scheduled weekday opening times are from 9.00am to 4.00pm, the facility is available from 2.15am for the market).
  • Eastcheap - in the island at the junction of Eastcheap, King William Street and Gracechurch Street.

There are two further conveniences, one or more of which may be operational on a part time basis during the closure of one or more of the above conveniences for maintenance, repairs or other reason, or during special events such as Lord Mayors Show. These conveniences are located at:

  • Aldgate - in the subway at the southern end of Middlesex Street, junction with St Botolph Street. This convenience, although normally closed is open on Sundays for the market in Middlesex Street.
  • Blackfriars - on the riverside walkway at the bottom of the steps to Blackfriars Road Bridge. (Please note: Open April - September only. Monday-Friday 9am-4pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-5pm).

The following public conveniences have full disabled access:

  • Tower Hill
  • Paternoster
  • West Smithfield

The following public conveniences have disabled cubicles but can only be accessed via stairs:

  • Bishopsgate
  • Eastcheap
  • Royal Exchange

  • Aldgate - Aldgate High Street near to Bus Depot
  • Harrow Place - Harrow Place by Middlesex Street
  • St Paul's - New Change by Festival Gardens
  • White Lion Hill - St Paul's Walk (Riverside Walkway)
  • Holborn - Charterhouse Street
  • Long Lane - Long Lane near junction with Aldersgate Street
  • Byward Street - junction of Byward Street and Mark Lane
  • St Bride Street - junction of St Bride Street and Farringdon Street
  • Aldermanbury - Between Gresham Street and Love Lane
  • Monument Street - Near Lower Thames Street
  • Fore Street Avenue - Fore Street Avenue junction with Fore Street
  • London Street - In pedestrianised area
  • Suffolk Lane - Near Upper Thames Street
  • Tower Place - Tower Place Development opposite the Tower of London

These facilities are available 24 hours a day. A charge of 20p is made for use of these conveniences.

The automatic public conveniences with full disabled access are located at Tower Place, St Paul's (New Change by Festival Gardens) and Long Lane (near junction with Aldersgate Street). The disabled conveniences can be accessed 24 hours a day by the National Key Operated Scheme. The disabled conveniences at Long Lane and Tower Place can also be accessed via 20p payment.
