Walking

The City is perfect for walking. Referred to as the “Square Mile” because of its size, a destination within its boundaries is never far away and, with over 150 parks, gardens, churchyards and plazas, there’s plenty of havens to provide respite for tired feet, a change of pace or the perfect setting for an al fresco lunch.

Walking within the City

The City has so many stories to tell, so many treasures to reveal and so many great and iconic buildings to see. Use our interactive map and take your own voyage of discovery or get the inside story from trained and dedicated experts. The City of London Guide Lecturers Association runs walks from the City of London Information Centre (opposite St Paul’s Cathedral) every day – to find out more, visit the Walks and tours section of this site.

Walking to other parts of London

London began here just after the Romans invaded in AD43 and it is from here that today’s thriving metropolis grew. Thus, the City sits at the heart of all London, making it the ideal base from which to visit everything London has to offer. The West End is a stone’s throw away; the East End – with its trendy markets and bars – a short walk; and historic Southwark – home of the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe – literally, over the Millennium Bridge. For information about what to see and do in these areas, visit the Visit London website.
