Shoppers after a real London market experience would do well to head to Leather Lane, a bargain-hunters' heaven selling, amongst other things, clothes, toiletries, food, electrical goods, CDs and videos.
Despite its name, shoppers won’t find a great deal of leather at Leather Lane, bar one or two stalls selling shoes and bags. In fact, the street has had a few monikers over the centuries. In the 13th century Leather Lane was called Le Vrunelane, possibly the name of a local merchant. In the 14th century it became Loverone Lane, before becoming Liver Lane and finally Leather Lane, as it is known today.
Now inexpensive cafés and bars line the street, providing opportunities for a time-out from the market – it gets particularly busy at lunchtimes – that has served this part of London for over 300 years.
