Paternoster Square is a key location for City workers and visitors to relax in a traffic-free environment. Pedestrianised walkways create a link between Cheapside, the City of London’s premier shopping street, and Ludgate Hill. The square is an ancient space with an interesting past. In the history of London it will be forever connected with Paternoster Row, a street that has its origins in medieval times when the clergy of St Paul’s use to walk in procession, telling their rosary beads and reciting the Paternoster prayer.
On your visit look out for Temple Bar, Sir Christopher Wren's imposing arch which marked the gateway to the City of London for 200 years, and Elizabeth Frink’s Shepherd and Sheep statue. Served by St Paul’s Underground station (Central Line) and City Thameslink, Paternoster Square is adjacent to London landmark St Paul’s Cathedral.
