Despite its name Petticoat Lane Market actually takes place on Wentworth Street, between Middlesex Street and Goulston Street. The title ‘Petticoat’ was deemed unsuitable during the reign of Queen Victoria and abandoned in favour of the more respectable Middlesex Street. However, the name stuck and Petticoat Lane is one of the capital’s most famous markets.
A huge variety of goods are traded on this bustling East End street but clothing, particularly leather goods, make up a large part of the stalls. Records, bric-a-brac and household goods are also on offer. Plenty of fast food outlets, many selling traditional Jewish food, provide the perfect pit-stops for shoppers.
The market is open on weekdays but the thriving and long-established Sunday street market is the main event – 10 streets around the usual market begin trading too and the place throngs with locals after a bargain and visitors fascinated by London’s famous street sale.
