Borough Market is the capital's oldest food market and an institution with Londoners. It was established on the south bank of the Thames when the Romans built the first London Bridge and has occupied its present site for 250 years. Wholesale trade takes place every night from 2am-8am (except Saturday) and countless stalls selling mouth-watering goodies are open to the public on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Be warned though, the market can become extremely crowded, so for those who prefer shopping in relative peace, Thursdays are undoubtedly the best option.
Borough Market is the country's most important retail market for fine foods and its Trustees and Traders believe that "everyone has a right to eat well." It is a founding member of Emporion, the European Association of Markets, and is run as a charity by a board of trustees, the majority of whom live in the Borough.
The market is a haven for foodies and restaurateurs alike and won three major awards in 2008: The Evening Standard London's Best Shopping Experience Award, The Evening Standard London's Best Market Award and The NABMA (National Association of British Market Authorities) Best Speciality Market 2008 Award.
