Whitecross Street Market first started in business in the 17th century, making it one of the oldest markets in London. Following the inevitable decline, it's now benefited from a programme of investment and regeneration – and its stalls selling fairtrade coffee, freshly squeezed juices, home-made cakes, proper cheeses, olives and bread make it a foodie heaven. There's more to Whitecross Street than its market, though. You'll find shops open every day here and the place has an eclectic, independent feel that's missing from many of the capital's high streets. Dining-wise there's Italian, sushi, plenty of cafes and a couple of decent pubs. Other outlets include a hairdressers, a charity shop, small art galleries and a Waitrose.
